Ceramic Pro ONE: The Story Behind Our New Single-Layer Ceramic Coating

How Ceramic Pro engineered a true single-layer coating without giving up the protection, gloss and hydrophobic performance that define the brand.

At Ceramic Pro, developing a new coating has never been about simply adding another product to the lineup. If we are going to introduce something new, it has to solve a real problem, perform to the standards people expect from Ceramic Pro and earn its place within our existing coating systems.

Ceramic Pro ONE began with a relatively simple question:

The question behind ONE

Could we create a true single-layer ceramic coating without compromising the characteristics that define a Ceramic Pro coating?

The answer took considerably more work than the question suggests.

As Director of Innovation at Ceramic Pro, my role throughout the development of ONE was to make sure we weren't creating a product simply because there was room for one. We wanted a coating that addressed a specific need for both professional installers and vehicle owners: a streamlined application process with legitimate professional-grade performance.

Creating Something Simpler Without Making It Lesser

The idea behind ONE developed as we looked at the evolution of the ceramic coating market and, more importantly, the needs of our installer network.

Ceramic Pro has built its reputation around advanced coating systems designed to work together in layers. That approach gives installers tremendous flexibility and allows us to build some extremely capable protection packages.

But not every customer or every vehicle requires a multi-layer system.

There was an opportunity to create something different: a single-layer product that could deliver meaningful protection, strong hydrophobic behavior, gloss and durability through one application.

The challenge was that we didn't want "single layer" to become another way of saying entry-level chemistry.

ONE still had to feel like Ceramic Pro.

  • It needed excellent application characteristics for the installer.
  • It needed strong chemical resistance and environmental protection.
  • It needed the slickness, gloss and water behavior customers notice immediately.
  • And, most importantly, those characteristics needed to remain consistent after the vehicle left the installation bay.

Until we could deliver all of that together, the product wasn't ready.

The Versions That Never Made It Out of Development

Product development rarely happens in a straight line, and ONE was no exception.

There were versions throughout development that performed well in certain areas but didn't give us the complete package we were looking for.

Some formulations could produce impressive initial hydrophobicity but didn't maintain the behavior at the level we expected. Others delivered strong protection but didn't provide the application experience or surface characteristics we wanted from a single-layer coating.

That's an important distinction.

It would have been relatively easy to create a coating that checked a few boxes and call the project finished. The difficult part was creating something balanced.

When you're developing a product like ONE, improving one characteristic can affect another. Increasing durability, changing surface tension, altering application behavior or pursuing a stronger hydrophobic effect can change how the entire coating performs.

That's where much of the development work happened: finding the point where all of those characteristics worked together instead of competing against each other.

Solving the Hydrophobic Challenge

One of the biggest areas of focus became water behavior.

Hydrophobic performance is one of the characteristics customers immediately associate with ceramic coatings. Water beads tightly, releases quickly from the surface and carries contamination with it. But achieving strong hydrophobic behavior is more complex than simply making water bead during a demonstration.

We wanted that behavior to be an inherent part of how ONE interacts with the surface.

That challenge helped lead to the development of what we describe as ONE's 3D hydrophobic structure.

Rather than approaching the surface as a completely flat protective layer, the chemistry creates a microscopic three-dimensional structure across the coated surface. That structure changes the way water interacts with the coating, reducing the contact area between the water droplet and the vehicle's surface.

The result is aggressive water beading and water release while maintaining the other characteristics required from a professional ceramic coating.

For us, the importance of that structure wasn't simply that it created an impressive visual effect. It helped solve the larger problem we were working on: achieving the combination of protection, durability and hydrophobic performance we wanted from a single application.

When ONE Finally Felt Like ONE

There isn't always one dramatic moment during product development when everyone in the room suddenly realizes the project is finished.

With ONE, it was more about reaching the point where we stopped finding compromises.

The application was where we wanted it. The surface looked right. The slickness was there. The hydrophobic behavior was there. The durability testing was giving us the results we expected.

Most importantly, those characteristics continued to perform together.

That was the point where ONE stopped feeling like an experimental formulation and started feeling like a Ceramic Pro product.

As someone involved in innovation, that's usually the threshold I'm looking for. You're no longer asking what the chemistry is missing. Instead, you're looking at the complete product and asking whether anything still needs to change.

With ONE, eventually the answer was no.

Expanding the Ceramic Pro Coating Ecosystem

ONE isn't designed to replace Ceramic Pro's existing coating systems.

It's designed to expand them.

Our multi-layer coating systems remain an important part of the Ceramic Pro lineup and allow Elite Dealers to build extremely robust protection packages depending on the customer's vehicle, ownership plans and expectations.

ONE gives installers another option.

For customers who want professional ceramic protection in a more streamlined package, ONE provides a purpose-built single-layer solution. It also gives Ceramic Pro installers the ability to serve a wider range of customers without stepping outside the Ceramic Pro coating ecosystem.

That distinction matters.

We didn't want our dealers choosing between offering a simpler coating package and offering Ceramic Pro. ONE allows them to do both.

Adam Cote, Director of Product Innovation

One Layer. A Lot of Engineering.

The simplicity of Ceramic Pro ONE is ultimately what made developing it complicated.

Creating another multi-step system wasn't the goal. The goal was to take the characteristics customers and installers expect from Ceramic Pro and engineer them into one layer without sacrificing the experience or performance that comes with our name.

That required testing formulations that never reached the market, revisiting how the surface interacts with water and continuing development until the product no longer felt like a compromise.

What customers see is one layer.

What they don't see is everything it took to make that one layer possible.

That's Ceramic Pro ONE.
