What we are really here to do is answer the internets burning questions. This week’s question is, “Can ceramic tint be added to privacy glass?”.

Let’s get into it.

First, What Exactly is Privacy Glass?

It’s summer, you just purchased a new car, truck, or SUV, and it came off the lot with a tint. At least, it looks like a tint. So, you’re good to go, right? Think again! That is actually a privacy glass. It may look like a dark window tint; however, it only serves one purpose – privacy.

In fact, a common misconception is that dark windows = window tint.

Privacy glass does not reject heat very well, nor does it block up to 99.9% UVA/UVB rays like a ceramic tint would. This means that you will still feel that heat from the sun on those hot summer days, and your interior will still continue to age from the damage caused by UV rays.

So, while you’ll have some privacy, it will still be hot inside your car. Gross.

Privacy glass is usually the tinted glass found on the rear windows of a vehicle, and the front windows are left untouched. Without getting too technical, privacy glass is manufactured just like tempered glass. However, during the manufacturing process, it is infused with a dye or pigment that darkens the windows. It provides a “tint” that helps block light and makes it more difficult for people to see into the vehicle, and it cannot be removed.

For a more technical explanation of privacy glass, you can read more about it in our blog post here!

Can Ceramic Tint Be Added to Privacy Glass?

Yes, you can! Because of the way privacy glass is manufactured and the fact that window tint is installed on the inside of your windows, you can add a ceramic tint to privacy glass without any issues. We know you were just dying to know the answer; sorry to keep you waiting for so long.

If you are looking for added heat rejection and protection from UV radiation, adding a window film, like a ceramic tint, is a great way to ensure these benefits. Installing a high-quality ceramic tint to your privacy glass will allow you to maintain the added privacy you get from your darkened windows while getting a better level of heat rejection.

The great thing about ceramic tint in particular, is that you can choose a much lighter shade, or VLT, and still receive incredible heat and UV rejection.

The ability to choose a lighter shade means that you can still reap the benefits of a high-quality window film without making your privacy glass any darker. Some states can be pretty strict about their window tint laws, so a ceramic tint allows you to abide by those laws without having to expose yourself to constant heat.

What are the Benefits of a Ceramic Tint, and Is It Worth It?

Ceramic tint has been a popular option for many vehicle owners and for good reason. With numerous advantages in comparison to dyed window film, ceramic window tint is the best film available on the market today in terms of protection from harmful UV rays and heat reduction properties. The benefits of ceramic tint include:

  • Up to 99% infrared heat rejection
  • Glare reduction
  • 99.9% Ultraviolet Protection
  • No signal interference
  • Prevents car interior aging and fading

A good quality, high-performance ceramic window tint has a long lifespan that will outlast other types of window film and will protect you and your passengers for the long haul, which is something that your privacy glass will not do.
